Overcoming Resistance

Is your dissatisfaction big enough?

Hi Reader,

Previously, we identified where you're feeling stuck. Those stuck points you uncovered? They're trying to tell you something important about what needs to change.

Have you ever noticed how some of your biggest life changes started with a simple thought: "I can't do this anymore"?

That feeling of dissatisfaction – with your current leadership approach, team dynamics, or personal growth – isn't just uncomfortable. It's actually the first essential ingredient in the formula for meaningful change. But here's the catch: not all dissatisfaction is created equal.

Think of dissatisfaction like fuel in your change engine. You need enough of it to power through the inevitable resistance you'll face. Too little, and you'll stall out at the first obstacle. Too much unfocused dissatisfaction, however, can lead to impulsive decisions that create more problems than solutions.

This Week's Challenge:

Take a few minutes to think through where you are dissatisfied:

  1. First, write down 2-3 current situations where you feel deeply frustrated or dissatisfied (personal or professional). Example: "Leading my team's weekly meetings"
  2. For each situation, list the top 2-3 specific things that must change. Example: Situation: Weekly team meetings Must Change:
  • Team members aren't contributing their ideas
  • We never reach clear action items
  • Discussions keep circling back to old topics

Important: Right now, resist the urge to solve these problems. This week is just about getting crystal clear on what's frustrating you. Don't worry about how to fix it - that will come later. Simply name what isn't working.

Complete this for each situation you identified. Be specific and honest - these "must changes" will become the foundation for next week's vision work.

Lead with purpose,
--Jason

What matters most? Hi Reader, A line in last week's email really stuck with me. Often, we can use busyness as a way to signal that we matter and that our time is valuable. But what is the actual measure of your time being valuable? What is the actual measure of you bringing value to others? I can have a successful week by knocking out the to-do list and making sure every minute is filled, but then I find myself wondering if I've actually invested myself in the right things. For me, the answer...

Today's Badge of Honor Hi Reader, "How are you doing?" "Busy." Is that a badge of honor for you... or a deep sigh? Because somewhere along the way our culture decided that busy is the right answer. The impressive answer. The one that signals you matter and your time is valuable. But here's the thing. Busy is easy to fake. And if it's genuinely exhausting you (if it's leading to frustration and burnout) why do we keep holding it up as the goal? I went to college in Texas and had the chance to...

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness Hi Reader, Six weeks ago, I asked you to write down your communication strengths and struggles before we started. If you did that, pull it back out. Look at what you wrote. By now, you've read about five different voice patterns and about how they communicate, where they thrive, and where they tend to get in their own way. And if you noticed, something probably clicked somewhere along the way. A description that felt uncomfortably accurate. A blind spot you...
