When the vision needs a shot of adrenaline

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness

Hi Reader,

If you've ever known someone that has never met a stranger, has a million friends, and "knows a guy" to solve your problems, then you've probably met a Connector.

About 11% of people lead with the Connector voice, and when this is yours, you have a gift most people spend years trying to develop. You build relationships quickly. You know how to read a room and communicate effectively to different kinds of people. Connectors can take an idea and create real momentum around it. When you believe in something, others tend to believe in it too.

Connectors aren't trying to be the center of attention, They are paying close attention to you and how you respond. Their superpower is unleashed when casting a vision for an idea and inspiring others to get on board.

The thing to be careful about, though, is that Connectors can struggle with critical feedback. Not because they're fragile, but because they're wired for connection and enthusiasm. When someone pushes back on an idea they've championed, it doesn't land as a critique of the idea. It lands as a critique of them. So instead of engaging with the concern, they work around it. They build momentum in another direction.

If you lead with the Connector voice, don't let feedback get you down. Listen with an open mind, trusting that the person pushing back has your best interest at heart. We need to pause and hear from the other 4 voices and how our ideas affect them.

And if Connector isn't your leading voice, make sure you are asking who needs to be onboard with the vision and direction. Not just informed, but bought in to the vision. Most leaders think about alignment too late. We assume our people are with us because we gave them a good plan. Connectors give us the "why".

Your challenge this week

How do you respond to feedback? Do you clench your teeth and pray it'll be over soon? Think of a situation from the past week where someone brought you feedback or criticism. How did you respond? How can you make sure the next time is a step better than the last?

Connectors believe they can change the world...and they're right.

Lead with Purpose,
--Jason

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness Hi Reader, Every team has one. The person who asks the questions nobody else is asking. The one who slows down before committing. The one who, after a decision gets made, quietly flags the things that could still go wrong. That person isn't pessimistic. They're a Guardian, and about 30% of people lead from this voice. Guardians are diligent. They think in processes, data, and consequences. They ask hard questions before they sign off on something because they...

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness Hi Reader, Of all the voices in the 5 Voices framework, the Creative is the one most likely to sense something coming down the road before anyone else. Only about 9% of people lead with the Creative voice, and if you're one of them, you probably already have an idea. You're the one who can't stop asking “what if”. You tend to see gaps other people haven't even noticed yet. You take half-formed ideas and develop it to completion in your head before anyone else...

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness Hi Reader, Last week I asked you to write down your communication strengths and where you struggle. If you listed things like "I'm a good listener," "I care about people," or "I avoid unnecessary conflict," this email is probably for you. The Nurturer voice is the most common foundational voice in the 5 Voices framework. 43% of people lead from here. And if it's yours, your team is better for it. Nurturers are the ones who actually feel how a decision will land...
