When you see opportunities and obstacles before everyone else

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness

Hi Reader,

Of all the voices in the 5 Voices framework, the Creative is the one most likely to sense something coming down the road before anyone else.

Only about 9% of people lead with the Creative voice, and if you're one of them, you probably already have an idea. You're the one who can't stop asking “what if”. You tend to see gaps other people haven't even noticed yet. You take half-formed ideas and develop it to completion in your head before anyone else even knows there's a problem to solve.

But this also means that Creatives often struggle with the fact that people never seem to fully understand their ideas. Their ideas are real to them, fully developed internally, but when they surface, they often come out fragmented or abstract. The team hears a concept where the Creative sees an entire architecture. That gap creates friction and people start expecting vague ideas or a critical, “it’s never good enough” attitude.

If you lead with the Creative voice, the discipline is learning to hash out the language to your ideas and communicate clearly so others can see the connections that you do. Don’t get frustrated when they don’t get it. Listen to their questions and let it help you bring your thoughts from abstract to concrete.

And if the Creative isn't your leading voice, lean in to it and consider “before we default to the way we’ve always done this, is there a better way?” Creatives love searching out new pathways that make the world a better place.

Your challenge this week: Take about 10 minutes to let your thoughts consider “what if”. If you’re not sure what to think about, listen to a podcast, read an article, or explore a trend in your industry and let it guide you to consider new ideas and ways of doing something.

What do you need to pursue in order to capture that next opportunity or avoid an oncoming obstacle?

Lead with Purpose,
--Jason

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness Hi Reader, Every team has one. The person who asks the questions nobody else is asking. The one who slows down before committing. The one who, after a decision gets made, quietly flags the things that could still go wrong. That person isn't pessimistic. They're a Guardian, and about 30% of people lead from this voice. Guardians are diligent. They think in processes, data, and consequences. They ask hard questions before they sign off on something because they...

The 5 Voices & Self-Awareness Hi Reader, Last week I asked you to write down your communication strengths and where you struggle. The Nurturer voice is the most common foundational voice in the 5 Voices framework. 43% of people lead from here. And if it's yours, your team is better for it. Nurturers are the ones who actually feel how a decision will land...
